Abusive Head Trauma
Caring for a young child is never easy, even for a person who has chosen childcare as a profession. Unable to communicate their wants and needs in the same way that an older child or adult can, an infant or toddler may resort to crying, screaming, or other behaviors that can assault a caregiver’s senses and grate on his or her patience.
Unfortunately, some individuals choose to take out their frustration on defenseless children by shaking them violently. This would be a wholly inexcusable response under any circumstances, and the painful realities of abusive head trauma (AHT or Shaken Baby Syndrome) are too severe for these actions to go unpunished.
If your child has suffered shaken baby syndrome, there are likely to be substantial medical bills both now and in the future. A civil lawsuit may be the best way to see that you receive the financial compensation that is necessary to pay for these expenses and to address other needs. Contact the Charleston child injury lawyers of the Steinberg Law Firm at 843-720-2800 to discuss your legal rights and options today.
Symptoms of Shaken Baby Syndrome
Although the informal name for AHT includes the word “shaken”, it is possible for a child to be afflicted with this dangerous condition as a consequence of any violent impact. A caregiver who hurts a child may attempt to distort the situation or to minimize the impression a parent receives about the severity of an incident. But the following symptoms are indicative of shaken baby syndrome and warrant immediate concern and medical attention:
- Discoloration of the skin
- Loss of appetite
- Loss of muscle control and involuntary movements
- Vision loss
- Decreased cognitive function
- Increased irritability
- Extreme lethargy
- Retinal detachment
