Wildfire Contained

by Administrator 29. April 2009 03:34

The wildfire that swept across the South Carolina coast has been contained after burning nearly 30 square miles of land. However, the Forest Commission has said that the fire will not be considered controlled until it stops producing heat.

The fire started April 22, likely as a result of a trash fire rekindling. Since the fire started, 70 homes have been destroyed and $25 million in damages has been caused. Fortunately, no injuries or deaths have been reported.

Fire Caused by Illegal Burn

by Administrator 24. April 2009 04:47

A man illegally burned yard debris on Saturday, causing a fire that spread to the neighboring yard before being put out. On Wednesday, that fire rekindled and burned down the man's house.

The fire then spread, and has burned about 20,000 acres of Horry County. It is not known why the fire was rekindled. However, the forestry commission is investigating.

Fires like this can cause a great deal of injury. If you or someone you know has been injured in a fire, contact the Charleston personal injury attorneys of The Steinberg Law Firm at 843-720-2800.

Tougher Penalties for Unlicensed Drivers

by Administrator 22. April 2009 03:02

Seven South Carolina legislators are sponsoring a new bill to increase the penalties for driving without a license. Fines would increase and any unlicensed driver who caused a serious injury or death would be subject to felony charges under the bill.

Current laws have first time offenders fined $50 to $100. The bill proposes fines of $300 to $1000 as well as 30 days to 6 months in jail. A second offense would mean a fine of $1000 to $2500 and 45 days to a year in jail. Third offenses and beyond would be felony offenses. This would help to deter unlicensed driving that causes injuries.

If you or someone you know has been injured by an unlicensed driver, contact the Charleston personal injury attorneys of The Steinberg Law Firm at 843-720-2800.
