Four people were killed when an Amtrak train struck theircar in Hardeeville, South Carolina.
Officials say the accident occurred near the SouthCarolina-Georgia state line, just before the intersection of South Carolina 46and U.S. 17. Ted Felder, theHardeeville interim city manager, said “It appears that the vehicle tried to goaround the gate arms… to beat the train across the tracks.”
The Jasper County, South Carolina, coroner has not releasedthe names of the victims.
The vehicle became wedged onto the front of the southboundAmtrak train, which pushed the car about a mile down the track. Felder saidthe Hardeeville Fire Department received a call shortly before 9 p.m. onMonday. Rescue teams however, were not able to detach the car until aboutmidnight.
Felder said that no one on the train was injured andpassengers were taken to the Amtrak station in Savannah, Georgia once the car wasremoved.
