Amtrak Train Collision Kills 4

A collision between an Amtrack train and a car in South Carolina resulted in the deaths of four people.  The accident occurred last Monday, at about 9:00 in the evening.

As with many such accidents, it apparently occurred because the driver of the car was trying to beat the train.  The car was struck as it tried to weave around the warning gates and was pushed almost a mile down the track, killing all four occupants, including a 12-year-old girl.

Pelzer Man Killed in Car Crash

A man from Pelzer died from injuries sustained in atwo-vehicle car accident on a road in West Pelzer.

Don McCown, the Anderson County Deputy Coroner, said 66year-old Larry Buchanan died shortly before 4:30 p.m. at Greenville MemorialHospital of multiple injuries suffered in the crash.

Buchanan’s Mitsubishi Galant collided with a southboundToyota Tacoma pick-up truck at a blind curve on Old River Road a quarter-of-amile north of Looper Road.

22 year-old Matthew Kotchish of Easley, the driver of thepick-up, said “I didn’t see him… I locked up my brakes but there wasn’t much Icould do.” Kotchish was wearing his seatbelt and was not injured in the crash.He commented that he had “never had a speeding ticket in my life.”

Two Children Killed in South Carolina Car Accident

A 10 year-old girl and a 3 year-old boy were killed in a weekend car crash in eastern South Carolina.

Tamaya Burgess and Tamel Watson died shortly before 2:10p.m. Saturday, following the crash. Mother of the two children, Tami Ivonne Turner of Kingstree, was treated and released from a local hospital.

According to police, Turner lost control of her vehicle andit ran off the road and overturned in a field. The girl, Tamaya, was ejected from the vehicle and thrown about 25 feet. She died at the scene.

The young boy, Tamil, was taken to a nearby hospital anddied Sunday morning.

South Carolina Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash.

4 Killed in Car-Train Crash

Four people were killed when an Amtrak train struck theircar in Hardeeville, South Carolina.

Officials say the accident occurred near the SouthCarolina-Georgia state line, just before the intersection of South Carolina 46and U.S. 17.  Ted Felder, theHardeeville interim city manager, said “It appears that the vehicle tried to goaround the gate arms… to beat the train across the tracks.”

The Jasper County, South Carolina, coroner has not releasedthe names of the victims.

The vehicle became wedged onto the front of the southboundAmtrak train, which pushed the car about a mile down the track. Felder saidthe Hardeeville Fire Department received a call shortly before 9 p.m. onMonday. Rescue teams however, were not able to detach the car until aboutmidnight.

Felder said that no one on the train was injured andpassengers were taken to the Amtrak station in Savannah, Georgia once the car wasremoved.

Troopers Explain Investigation into Fatal Crash

Officials with the South Carolina Highway Patrol haveexplained their decision involving a crash that killed a 19 year-old woman inAugust.

Nikki Geddings, was riding in a car driven by CharlesAtkinson when he swerved off the road and hit a tree after noticing a car inhis lane up ahead. Police determined the driver of the car was not at fault,but a neighbor was ticketed. Her car was parked on the wrong side of the roadas she was checking her mail.

The Geddings’ family is upset with the investigation. Nikki’sparents believe the driver should have been charged.

Highway Patrol Colonel Kenny Lancaster supports the findingsof the investigation. “Our hearts go out to the family.” Lancaster said. “Weunderstand their reaction. We understand why they’re wanting answers, but Iexplained to them the bottom line is we have given them the facts… What we wanteverybody to know is speed was not involved in the crash. Impairment was notinvolved in this crash. What’s involved in this crash is that we have someoneon the wrong side of the road to check their mailbox.”

Man Drives Car into Liquor Store

Clean-up continues at a Pawley’s Island business after a mandrove his car through a storefront on Monday afternoon.

The accident occurred at Pawley’s Island Wine and Spirits at10135 Ocean Highway in Pawley’s Island. The driver of the vehicle stated thathe is “disappointed” that he mixed up the gas and brake pedals in his vehicle.The man plowed through a large pane glass window at the front of the store.

There is no word on how much damage was caused by theaccident. Police have not said if the driver will face charges.
