One Killed in Sunday Crash, Driver Charged with DUI

A man from Saluda, South Carolina was killed Sunday morning in a car accident on Highway 178.

 

According to South Carolina Highway Patrol Lieutenant Corporal Bill Rhyne, the 23 year-old Jasper Wendell Robinson was a passenger in a vehicle driven by Melvin Thomas Mathis, 23, when the crash occurred. Mathis was driving a 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe south on Highway 178, near McKenzie Road, shortly after 3:00 a.m. this morning when he lost control of the vehicle, ran off the right side of the road and struck a telephone junction call box, which caused the vehicle to overturn, Rhyne said. 

 

Two other men from Saluda, 23 year-old Gregory Gilliam and 23 year-old Ricardo Gantt were in the vehicle at the time of the crash. Mathis, Gilliam, and Gnatt were transported to Self Regional Medical Center after sustaining minor injuries. Robinson was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, according to the Greenewood County Coroner's Office.

 

Mathis was charged with felony DUI and booked at the Greenwood County Detention Center at 7:40 a.m. Sunday. 

 

An autopsy for Robinson will be performed Monday morning in Anderson.

Fatal Crash on SC Route 410

One person was killed in an early morning car crash in Horry County, Sunday.

 

According to officials with the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the victime, a 23 year-old woman from Loris, was traveling west on South Carolina Primary Route 410 when the accident occurred. Police say the woman's 2006 Pontiac ran off the right side of the road and overturned several times.

 

Horry County Deputy Coroner, Tony Hendrick, identified the victim as Lisa Norris Causey. She was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, Hendrick said. Causey was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and was ejected from the vehicle, according to South Carolina Highway Patrol Corporal Paul Brothers

Spartanburg Teen Dies in Crash

A teenager from Spartanburg was killed in a two-vehicle collision in Cherokee County early Sunday morning. 

 

According to Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler, 19 year-old Ashley Brooke Pappas, of 113 Cart Drive, was driving north in a 1999 Mazda on U.S. highway 29, about 3 miles south of Gaffney, shortly after 2:20 a.m. Sunday when the accident occurred. Pappas drove left of the center line and struck a southbound Chevrolet Tahoe head-on Fowler said.

 

911 dispatchers received two calls from motorists driving behind Pappas vehicle reporting erratic driving. "My office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol are continuing to investigate what might have caused her to [lose control]." 

 

Fowler has ordered an autopsy to assist with his investigation.

12 Middle School Students Injured in Bus Crash

A school bus crash Thursday left 12 middle school students injured.

 

According to Lynn Lawson, a Union County schools spokeswoman, 26 students were on the bus that collided with a car shortly after 7:00 a.m. Thursday near Sims Middle School in Union. The crash occurred after, police say, the driver of the school bus failed to yield the right of way.

 

Wallace Thomson Hospital spokeswoman Susan Foster, says the two drivers and twelve students were checked into the hospital. Foster could not comment on whether the students were admitted for treatment. Police did not disclose the nature or extent of the victims' injuries. 

 

Troopers ay the driver of the school bus will be ticketed for failure to yield the right of way.

Orangeburg Teen Killed in Car Crash

A teenager in Orangeburg, South Carolina was killed and her sister critically injured after a car accident Wednesday morning.

 

According to officials with the South Carolina Highway Patrol, Stacey Williams was pulling out of the driveway at her home on Countryside Drive when the accident occurred. She was struck by 21-year-old Shaleisha Green. 

 

Williams' sister Tori was transported to the hospital by helicopter after the accident, where she is listed in critical condition. Green was not injured in the crash.

 

Countryside Drive was blocked for an hour as officials investigated the accident.

Woman Killed After South Carolina Accident

A woman was killed Monday evening in a South Carolina car crash.

 

According to officials with the Anderson County Coroner's Office, 33 year-old Kimberly Gail Rumsey, was the only person involved in the single-vehicle accident. Her car overturned on the side of the roadway. Anderson County Coroner Greg Shore said the crash occurred on Elberton Highway west of Iva, shortly before 5:00 p.m. 

 

Rumsey was pronounced dead shortly after 7:00 p.m. The cause of death was noted as chest trauma. She was transported to Greenville Memorial Hospital by a LifeFlight helicopter.

 

Rumsey lived on Elberton Highway in Iva, Shore said.
