Ban on all cellphone use proposed

by Administrator 20. December 2011 06:23

A total ban on cellphone and portable electronics use while driving was proposed by the National Transportation Safety Board early last week. The ban comes amid the rising numbers of fatal car accidents caused by distracted drivers using their phones.

In a survey conducted by the board, a fifth of all 6000 Americans questioned admitted to having sent emails or text messaes while on the road. Most of people surveyed said they did not think they were a danger to other drivers, but believed other drivers on their phones were.

While the NTSB does not have the power to enforce its suggested ban, lawmakers at the state and congressional level, as well as federal regulators, believe its recommendations carry significant weight.

Submerged car leads to reckless driving charge

by Administrator 13. October 2011 03:43

A 30 year-old man has been charged with reckless driving after leaving his car partially submerged in marsh near Folly Road and Battery Island Drive.

A resident saw the vehicle slowly sinking into the marsh. Police on the scene called in a recovery team to search for possible passengers trapped inside the car. Finding none, the car was dragged out of the water. Law enforcement tracked down the lessee to a Folly Beach home. A deputy crawled through the window after there was no answer and found the driver asleep in bed.

The man, who is a bartender in downtown Folly Beach, said he worked a 14 hour day and only responded saying he had "enough" to drink the night before. Police charged him with leaving the scene of an accident along with reckless driving.
