Charleston Personal Injury Lawyer FAQs
What are punitive and compensatory damages?
Compensatory damages, also known as actual damages, are awarded to a plaintiff as repayment for expenses he or she has faced. Lost wages, medical expenses, and attorney’s fees are all examples. Punitive damages are awarded when a jury decides that the compensatory damages they’ve given are not an adequate repayment. They are sometimes considered a way to punish grossly negligent defendants.
