In 2007, more than twenty million toys were recalled in the United States due to unsafe levels of lead in toys that were imported from China. However, although these recalls were attributable to failures in the manufacturing process, a study conducted by Hari Bapuji of the University of Manitoba’s Asper School of Business found that, of all toy recalls issued in the U.S. from 1988 through August 2007, three-quarters were due to design flaws.
