On August 28, 2024, the Boar’s Head meat and poultry recall was expanded to include the state of South Carolina. There have been many reports of consumers becoming gravely ill after consuming specific products, including multiple fatalities.

The original recall in other states began on July 26, 2024, and involved deli products that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).

The recall includes 71 products produced between May 10, 2024, and July 29, 2024, and using the Boar’s Head and Old Country brand names.

These products were available in both packaged products as well as at the deli counter and have expiration dates ranging from 29-JUL-2024 through 17-OCT-24.

Symptoms of Food Poisoning Due to Listeria

Eating food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause a serious infection called listeriosis. It is especially dangerous to those who are pregnant, over the age of 65 or with a weakened immune system. If you have eaten anything on the recall list, contact a healthcare provider immediately. Listeria is treated with antibiotics. If the infection spreads and becomes invasive it can cause:

• Miscarriage and stillbirth
• Serious and fatal infections in older adults and people with weakened immune systems
• Serious infections in newborns

Symptoms similar to the flu can occur as long as two months after consuming the contaminated product. The guidelines to clean an area after contamination are strict, including discarding all meats and cheeses in the deli area and sanitizing the entire deli case. Home refrigerators should be thoroughly cleaned and sanitized as well.

Cross Contamination Concerns

In addition to consuming the Boar’s Head products directly, it was (and is) possible to become ill after consuming deli or restaurant food contaminated by the Boar’s Head products. Delis, meat counters, stores and restaurants are potentially liable for not disposing of contaminated products including non-Boar Head products placed near to contaminated Boar’s Head products, properly sterilizing their storage cases and meat/cheese slicers and serving counters.
