Spartanburg Teen Dies in Crash

A teenager from Spartanburg was killed in a two-vehicle collision in Cherokee County early Sunday morning.

According to Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler, 19 year-old Ashley Brooke Pappas, of 113 Cart Drive, was driving north in a 1999 Mazda on U.S. highway 29, about 3 miles south of Gaffney, shortly after 2:20 a.m. Sunday when the accident occurred. Pappas drove left of the center line and struck a southbound Chevrolet Tahoe head-on Fowler said.

911 dispatchers received two calls from motorists driving behind Pappas vehicle reporting erratic driving. “My office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol are continuing to investigate what might have caused her to [lose control].”

Fowler has ordered an autopsy to assist with his investigation.
