Is It Safe to Ride a Motorcycle in the Rain?

Riding a motorcycle in the rain is riskier than riding on dry pavement. Common risks that can increase the likelihood of a crash include:

• Slippery roads. Road surfaces are slippery when wet. All vehicles need more space to stop on wet pavement compared to dry pavement. Drivers who don’t take this stopping distance into account can more easily cause a crash with a motorcyclist. Motorcycles can also lose traction more quickly than cars in the rain, limiting a motorcyclist’s options to perform emergency maneuvers to avoid a crash. 
• Low visibility. Rain, fog, and cloudy weather make it harder for drivers to see others on the road, including motorcyclists. Drivers who fail to slow down and account for this low visibility may collide with a motorcyclist, causing injuries.
• Sudden hazards. The sudden appearance of wet leaves, large puddles, debris, or flash flooding can all greatly increase the risk of a crash. Drivers may brake without warning or swerve, colliding with any motorcyclist near them. Bikers may have few or no options to get out of the way if this occurs. 

South Carolina law doesn’t prohibit motorcyclists from riding in the rain. The risks of doing so, however, can be high. 

Common causes of motorcycle accidents include drivers failing to pay attention to the road, drivers speeding, and drivers who are under the influence of alcohol or other substances. Rainy weather amplifies these risks. 

Distracted drivers may not notice motorcyclists, or they may miss weather changes, visibility changes, or the need to increase their following distance so they can stop safely. 

Speeding drivers may be driving too fast to stop safely on wet pavement or avoid a sudden hazard. Even if the driver is at or below the legal speed limit, they may be going too fast to control their vehicle safely in the rain. “Driving too fast for weather conditions” is still considered a form of speeding in South Carolina and a failure to practice due care to prevent accidents. 

Operating a vehicle under the influence of drugs or alcohol raises the risks to everyone on the road, regardless of the weather. In the rain, these drivers’ failure to accurately judge their speed, stopping distance, or proximity to other vehicles can be catastrophic.
