WHAT ARE THE HOURS OF SERVICE REGULATIONS?
A truck driver may be forced by his or her employer to violate the hours of service laws. However, any company caught ignoring these laws can be held responsible for accidents stemming from the employer’s wrongdoing.
The following hours of service regulations are meant to prevent accidents caused by truck driver exhaustion:
- Truck drivers cannot drive more than 11 hours consecutively
- Truck drivers are not allowed to work more than 14 hours consecutively
- Truck drivers are restricted from working more than 70 hours in eight days
- Truck drivers can’t work more than 60 hours in seven days
- All trucking shifts must be preceded by at least a 10-hour break
