Labor Day Weekend May Be Deadliest in 8 Years

With the national rise in traffic deaths in the first half of the year, the National Safety Council (NSC) predicts the deadliest Labor Day Weekend since 2009. The NSC estimates that 438 people will lose their lives in auto accidents this Labor Day Weekend, September 2 – September 5. That’s more deaths than a 747 plane crash would claim.

This is the highest fatality estimate by the NSC since 2008. Then, 439 fatalities were predicted, but the Labor Day death toll was higher at 473.

Nearly half of the car accident deaths reported for the holiday weekend in 2014 (the most recently reported data) involved drunk drivers. Nighttime hours from 6:00 pm to 6:00 am are especially dangerous.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and law enforcement around the country launched their campaign – Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over – earlier this month. It will run through Labor Day Weekend in an attempt to deter drivers from getting behind the wheel after consuming alcohol.

If your weekend plans include road travel, drive carefully and defensively this weekend. And remember, if you are going to drink, make plans for getting home safely, such as designating a sober driver or calling a taxi. Don’t become a statistic this weekend.
