A man was killed in an accident in Kershaw County on Monday following a police pursuit.

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the accident occurred on I-20 eastbound near the 102 mile marker at 8:08 p.m. Police officials say a 2003 Volkswagen was being pursued by the Lee County Sheriff’s Department and the Kershaw County Sheriff’s Department. According to a statement released by the Lee County sheriff, the man was clocked by a deputy as going 99 mph in a 70 mph zone.

A North Carolina woman, who was a passenger in the car, said the driver took off saying he was not going to get arrested. The sheriff said the man would not have been arrested, but only fined.

The SCHP says the driver lost control of his vehicle and skidded off the roadway, striking several trees. The driver was killed in the accident. The North Carolina woman and her child were also injured in the crash.
