Catherine Meehan Obtains $390K Settlement for Jogger Hit by Police Vehicle

Attorney Catherine Meehan recently settled an accident involving a pedestrian and a police vehicle. A jogger was struck by a police patrol vehicle in Goose Creek, South Carolina, in 2017.

The accident involved a police officer. Meehan said a dashcam video captured the accident.

South Carolina police officers are a part of the South Carolina Department of Public Safety (SCDPS). Their mission is to serve and protect the public. At all times while on duty, police officers must conduct themselves with a high standard of professionalism. To ensure police officers appropriately perform their work duties, the SCDPS outlined the Code of Ethics for every member of law enforcement to follow. While adhering to the rules of the SCDPS, police officers must also obey the standards set for the general public, including traffic laws.

The jogger sustained multiple injuries in the accident. Among her injuries were a tear to her left anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and a labral tear to her left hip. The woman had to undergo reconstructive surgery and rehabilitation. The woman’s doctors said she would need extensive future medical treatment for her injuries.

The settlement agreed to in December 2019, included $165,976.67 in past medical expenses, $163,398.68 in future medical fees, and $21,000 in childcare expenses, for the mother of young children.

Meehan successfully negotiated on behalf of her client so that she would not need to struggle financially, and instead could focus on recovering after an accident. Meehan ultimately got the woman a $390K settlement.
