South Carolina Car Accident Traumatic Brain Injury Lawyers
Someone is injured in a South Carolina traffic accident about every nine minutes. While the types of injuries that can result from a motor vehicle accident vary, head injuries, including concussions and other traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), are among the most common. Traumatic brain injuries often have major implications on an accident victim’s life and may have long-term effects that are not immediately apparent after the injury.
At the Steinberg Law Firm, we represent clients who have been seriously injured in serious motor vehicle collisions and help them recover fair compensation for the injuries they have sustained. With over 200 years of combined experience, we can confidently advise you about your options and help you pursue a claim for compensation.
Traumatic Brain Injuries
A TBI is type of acquired brain injury that is characterized by a sudden damage to the brain caused by some external force. Traumatic brain injuries are categorized as either open or closed. Open head injuries occur when the outer layer of the meninges is breached, whereas closed head injuries occur without any penetration of the skull. Motor vehicle accidents are one of the leading causes of closed head injuries, with an estimated 20 percent of all TBIs stemming from traffic accidents.
Medical professionals further classify TBIs into three categories, depending on the severity of the symptoms the accident victim is experiencing:
- Mild: The accident victim is awake with their eyes open. Symptoms of a mild TBI often include a brief loss of consciousness, headache, memory loss and confusion.
- Moderate: The accident victim is lethargic and is able to open their eyes when prompted. Symptoms of a moderate TBI include loss of consciousness ranging between 20 minutes and six hours, brain swelling and mild brain bleeding.
- Severe: The accident victim is unconscious and will not open their eyes when prompted. Severe TBIs are characterized by periods of unconsciousness lasting more than six hours.
One aspect of TBIs that makes them particularly dangerous is that the symptoms of a TBI may initially seem to be mild, even in cases where there was significant damage to the brain. In such cases, a subsequent head injury can worsen the initial symptoms, resulting in a recurrent traumatic brain injury. For this reason, it is crucial that anyone who has been involved in a serious Charleston car accident obtain the necessary medical care.
The symptoms of a TBI vary depending on the seriousness of the injury. However, symptoms of a TBI will often include one or more of the following:
- Memory loss
- Visual problems
- Loss of consciousness
- Confusion and disorientation
- Poor attention or concentration
- Sleep disturbances
- Emotional disturbances
- Dizziness or a loss of balance
