Nara Organics Infant Formula Lawsuits

Attorneys Investigate Claims for Families Affected by Recalled Nara Infant Formula

Few products require a higher level of trust than infant formula. Parents rely on manufacturers to provide safe nutrition for their babies during the earliest and most vulnerable months of life. When that trust is broken, the consequences can be devastating.

The Steinberg Law Firm is investigating claims involving recalled Nara Organics powdered infant formula after federal health officials linked the product to cases of infant botulism. If your child became seriously ill after consuming recalled Nara formula, you may have legal options.

Our firm has successfully represented families harmed by contaminated food products, including securing a recent $3.85 million settlement for a family affected by a foodborne illness. We understand the complexity of foodborne illness litigation and work with leading medical experts, microbiologists, and product safety professionals to hold manufacturers accountable. We have been protecting the rights of seriously injured individuals for almost 100 years and have recovered over $1 Billion for our clients. Prior results do not guarantee a similar outcome; every case is evaluated on its own facts.

What Is the Nara Infant Formula Recall?

On June 13, 2026, Nara Organics voluntarily recalled all lots of its Whole Milk Organic Powdered Infant Formula following a multistate outbreak investigation involving infant botulism. The recall came after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) identified multiple infants who became seriously ill after consuming the formula. The recalled formula was sold nationwide at Target stores, Target.com, and Nara.com between July 2025 and June 2026.

According to federal investigators:

  • At least four infants in California, Pennsylvania, and Washington became seriously ill after consuming Nara formula.
  • All four infants were hospitalized, and each experienced paralysis.
  • All four infants were boys between two and five months old, and their illnesses began in April and May 2026.
  • Laboratory testing detected Clostridium botulinum bacteria in a can of Nara formula that had been fed to one of the infants. Additional testing by the FDA is ongoing.
  • Infants received BabyBIG®, the only FDA-approved treatment for infant botulism.
  • The recall includes all lots currently on the market because of the severity of the reported illnesses and the ongoing investigation.

As investigations continue, additional cases may be identified.

Understanding Infant Botulism

Infant botulism is a rare but life-threatening illness caused by Clostridium botulinum. The bacteria produce a powerful neurotoxin that attacks the nervous system, leading to muscle weakness and paralysis.

Unlike older children and adults, infants under one year of age have immature digestive systems that allow the bacteria to grow and produce toxin inside the intestines.

Without prompt treatment, infant botulism can progress rapidly and may require:

  • Intensive care hospitalization
  • Mechanical ventilation
  • Feeding tubes
  • Months of rehabilitation
  • Ongoing neurological treatment

Although many infants recover with aggressive medical care, some children experience long-term complications affecting muscle strength, development, and overall health.

Signs and Symptoms of Infant Botulism

Parents should seek immediate medical attention if a baby develops symptoms after consuming powdered infant formula. Because botulism symptoms can appear days or even weeks after the formula is consumed, parents should stay alert even if their baby seemed healthy at first.

Symptoms may include:

  • Constipation
  • Poor feeding
  • Weak sucking
  • Weak or altered cry
  • Drooping eyelids
  • Loss of facial expression
  • Muscle weakness
  • Floppiness (“floppy baby syndrome”)
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Trouble breathing
  • Respiratory failure

Botulism is a medical emergency. Early diagnosis and treatment can significantly improve outcomes.

Why Are Lawsuits Being Filed?

Product manufacturers have a legal responsibility to ensure that infant formula is safe before it reaches store shelves.

When contaminated products cause preventable injuries, families may have the right to pursue compensation through a product liability claim.

Depending on the facts uncovered during the investigation, claims may involve allegations such as:

  • Manufacturing defects
  • Contaminated ingredients
  • Inadequate quality control
  • Failure to identify contamination before distribution
  • Failure to warn consumers promptly
  • Negligence in manufacturing or testing

Federal investigators continue examining the source of the contamination and the manufacturing process involved in producing the recalled formula.

This is not the first time these suppliers have been connected to infant botulism. The milk used in the recalled Nara formula was supplied by Organic West Milk and spray-dried into powder by Dairy Farmers of America — the same two companies whose milk and milk powder were linked to a botulism outbreak involving a different infant formula brand just months earlier. That earlier outbreak, connected to ByHeart infant formula, sickened 48 infants across 17 states and prompted a nationwide recall in November 2025. According to the FDA, when investigators traced that first outbreak, Organic West Milk provided an incomplete customer list that did not disclose it was also supplying the maker of Nara formula. Had that information been shared, the exposure to these same milk products may have been identified sooner. Federal officials are now examining whether the same milk supply chain contributed to both outbreaks, and our attorneys are investigating what these companies knew after the first outbreak — and whether the illnesses suffered by these four infants could have been prevented.

What Compensation May Be Available?

Every case is different, but families whose children suffered injuries after consuming contaminated infant formula may be entitled to recover damages for:

  • Past medical expenses
  • Future medical treatment
  • Hospital bills
  • Intensive care costs
  • Rehabilitation expenses
  • Developmental therapy
  • Future care needs
  • Pain and suffering
  • Emotional distress
  • Permanent disability
  • Loss of future earning capacity when applicable

In the most tragic situations involving the loss of a child, surviving family members may also have wrongful death claims under applicable state law.

  • Preserve the remaining formula, packaging, lot numbers, and purchase receipts if possible.

  • Follow guidance from your pediatrician and public health officials.
  • Document all medical treatment and expenses.
  • Speak with an experienced product liability attorney before discarding important evidence.

The preserved product and medical records may become important evidence during an investigation.
