The Most Dangerous Roads in North Charleston

North Charleston sits at the intersection of three South Carolina counties: Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester Counties. These three counties post some of the highest rates of roadway deaths in South Carolina each year.

In the first half of 2024, the South Carolina Department of Public Safety (SCDPS) reported 16 roadway deaths in Berkeley County, 24 deaths in Charleston County, and 13 deaths in Dorchester County. The SCDPS estimates that 924 people died in roadway accidents in the state in 2024, according to two news reports.

Hazardous roads in North Charleston include:

Ashley Phosphate Road

The Berkeley Charleston Dorchester Council of Government’s Traffic Counts for 2011-2020 recorded high traffic volume along Ashley Phosphate Road. These numbers increase each year.

In 2023, over 114,000 vehicles passed along Ashley Phosphate Road near US-52 daily. Ashley Phosphate Road to South Aviation Avenue regularly recorded over 167,000 daily vehicles.

Ashley Phosphate Road is a busy area. The Northwoods Mall and the Charleston airport both attract significant traffic. In addition, certain intersections along Ashley Phosphate Road can be challenging to navigate safely.

For example, the intersection of Ashley Phosphate Road and Interstate 26 has several features that make it difficult to navigate. It’s a large intersection, with signal lights spaced far apart, making it difficult to tell which signal applies to which traffic lane. Drivers who become confused can easily turn at the wrong time or fail to stop, which can cause a car crash. Faded paint on the roadway makes it challenging to tell where the lanes are or which lane is designated for which purpose. Drivers may end up in the wrong lane, increasing the chance of a car crash. The intersection lacks robust safety measures for people who aren’t in cars, like crosswalks or separated bike lanes.

Interstate 26 and Interstate 526.

The intersection with Ashley Phosphate Road is not the only dangerous part of Interstate 26, although this exit does increase the risks for I-26 travelers. The ramps connecting I-26 and Ashley Phosphate Road frequently back up with traffic. Backed-up traffic can increase crash risks. It can also increase the risk that poor driving behavior will result in a collision.

In 2022, 25 people lost their lives in collisions on I-26. Over 1,200 people suffered injuries in I-26 crashes.

I-26 also intersects with I-526 in North Charleston. The roadway design is complex. It incorporates interchange ramps between the two interstate highways, on- and off-ramps for entering and exiting traffic, and feeder roads to manage traffic flow around the interchange. Traffic is often heavy in this area, as the interchange is located near several North Charleston landmarks, including the Charleston International Airport as well as exits for Mt. Pleasant and Savannah, GA. Crashes occur at other sites on I-526 in North Charleston as well.

The I-26 speed limit in this area is 60 miles per hour. Drivers who are not paying attention to the speed limit changes may exceed 60 miles per hour, increasing the risk of a crash.

Dorchester Road

Dorchester Road in North Charleston is a common scene of dangerous accidents. In 2022, for example, six fatal crashes on Dorchester Road occurred. Eleven people were involved in these crashes, including three pedestrians.

Several of the 2022 Dorchester Road crashes occurred at intersections. A July 2022 crash at the Dorchester Road and Michaux Parkway intersection caused two deaths. Later that month, a collision at Dorchester Road and Scarsdale Avenue claimed one life.

Dorchester Road continues to pose dangers to travelers. In February 2025, a vehicle collided with a pedestrian, killing the pedestrian. In April 2025, a police pursuit of a car ended in a collision that claimed one life and caused several injuries.

Rivers Avenue

Rivers Avenue is a busy area, hosting many businesses, stores, and restaurants. Heavy traffic flow means that vehicles stop and turn frequently.

Recent news reports underscore the risks on Rivers Avenue. A September 2024 drunk driving crash on Rivers Avenue at Benderson Drive claimed a life. In February 2025, a pedestrian suffered fatal injuries after being hit by a car on Rivers Avenue between Fuller and Rebecca Streets.

In April 2025, a truck collided with a utility pole. The collision brought down overhead wires, forcing the closure of the eastbound lanes of Rivers Avenue at Greenridge Road and the US 52 connector to I-26 and Ashley Phosphate Road. Later the same month, a bicyclist was killed in a crash at the intersection of Rivers Avenue and Eagle Drive.

Features of Dangerous Roads and Intersections in North Charleston

What makes some roads and intersections in North Charleston more dangerous than others? The people on them. Several factors can increase the risk of a collision on any roadway. Many North Charleston roads share several of these factors, further increasing the risk of a crash.

Lots of traffic. High traffic volumes increase the risk of a collision. The more cars, bicyclists, motorcyclists, and pedestrians try to navigate a road or intersection, the more likely it is that two or more will collide.

Lack of visibility. Signs, landscaping, buildings, and road design can all make it difficult for drivers to see the road ahead. Weather can also play a role. However, poor road design decreases visibility even in good weather and increases the risk of a crash.

Complex or confusing road setups. Many intersections have multiple lanes, worn paint, complex or confusing signs, numerous signals, or layouts that are difficult to navigate. A well-known example in North Charleston is the intersection of I-26 and Ashley Phosphate Road. Here, multiple lanes, worn and poorly marked curbs, and multiple signs and signals make it hard for drivers to navigate the intersection, increasing the risk of a collision.

Driver behavior. Speeding, tailgating, or aggressive driving can all increase the risk of an accident and make roads more dangerous. Roadway design can influence some driver behavior. Under South Carolina law, all drivers owe a duty of care to other drivers, pedestrians, and bikers.

Lack of dividers. Multiple lanes of two-way traffic with no divider can easily produce a crash. In 2022, two-way streets with no dividers saw 708 roadway deaths, 1,536 serious injuries, and 26,215 other injuries.

Driveways. Areas with many driveways that enter roadways have high accident counts. In 2022, for instance, driveway collisions resulted in 88 deaths and over 3,500 injuries in South Carolina. Busy shopping or business areas typically have many driveways, raising the danger on these roadways.

Common Injuries in North Charleston Auto Accidents

A car accident can cause serious injuries. Common injuries that occur in car accidents include:

Many people injured in vehicle collisions experience multiple types of injuries. Treating these injuries can be challenging, and the effects can be lifelong. Steps To Take After A North Charleston Car Accident

After any crash, put safety and health first. Protect the safety of those at the crash scene. Call 911 for emergency assistance. If you don’t receive emergency medical care immediately after the accident, schedule a doctor’s appointment as soon as possible.

Seeing a doctor soon after a crash has several benefits. First, prompt medical treatment may improve your health outcomes. Second, visiting a doctor as quickly as possible ensures that you have a complete medical record of all your injuries. This record also clarifies how your injuries may be connected to the crash.

Save the paperwork you get from your doctor’s office. Keep this paperwork in a safe place. Store all the other paperwork from the collision in the same place. If you have your car towed or repaired, for example, keep that paperwork in the same place. This paperwork supports a compensation claim.

Finally, speak to an experienced attorney as soon as possible. A lawyer who has successfully represented injury clients in North Charleston can investigate your case and deal with insurance companies so that you can focus on healing.

Efforts to Improve Safety on North Charleston’s Roads

Local officials are taking steps to make North Charleston’s roadways less dangerous. One notable example is the Palmetto Commerce Interchange.

The Palmetto Commerce Interchange is located on I-26 between University Boulevard and Ashley Phosphate Road. Once completed, the interchange will allow drivers to enter and exit I-26 via Weber Boulevard. The project seeks to alleviate congestion along I-26 to reduce the risk of traffic collisions.

Roadway improvements are only one option for improving North Charleston’s road safety. Ultimately, North Charleston drivers must take responsibility for safety on area roads. One local official explained how the roads themselves are not dangerous – it is the people who drive on them that make them so.
