What do I need to know about my South Carolina accident report?

South Carolina accident reports are filled out by law enforcement personnel. However, it is a good idea to check the information the report contains.

The most critical parts to check for are:

Driver/Pedestrian Information – This includes names, contact information and vehicle information for all drivers involved. Other information includes drivers’ license info, vehicle identification numbers, insurance company information, vehicle make, and whether or not a driver contributed to the accident. There may be a record of the drivers’ speed, the posted speed limit and whether drivers were arrested at the scene. Check to see if alcohol or drugs were involved and whether other drivers were required to hold a commercial driver’s license.
Estimated Property Damage – This section shows an estimate for the number of damages involved and eyewitness information. After the accident reconstruction team is done, the police draw a diagram of how the accident happened and write out a description of the collision. Check this section for details that may have been missed. This section may help an attorney determine who was at fault for the accident.
Personal information – All injuries, and their severity, of those involved in the accident, are listed in this section. Other details include if airbags were deployed, seat belts were fastened and whether anyone was ejected on impact.
Sequence of events – The police detail how the accident appeared to have happened and which vehicles collided, how it happened (head-on, T-bone, rear-ended) and what happened before the crash. All tests administered at the scene of the accident with test results are logged in this section.
Crash details – This section includes road, weather and light conditions. It also lists what possible factors contributed to the accident such as DUI, distracted driving, vehicle defects, and failure to obey traffic signals or signs.
