What should I do after a car accident?

Under South Carolina law, the drivers of vehicles involved in a car accident must immediately stop at the scene. While at the accident scene, one of the drivers should provide reasonable aid and call 911 for injured persons to receive medical attention. Then the drivers involved in the collision need to exchange their names, addresses, and the registration numbers of their vehicles.

In an accident with injury or death, the drivers must immediately contact the police or South Carolina Highway Patrol to report the accident. If the accident does not require police to investigate or the police does not investigate the accident, the drivers have fifteen days from the date of the accident to submit a written accident report to the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (SCDMV). The drivers must also submit verification that they have liability coverage at the time of the accident to the SCDMV.

Next, the drivers should make sure to obtain medical attention. Even if you feel that your injuries are not severe, you should make a doctor appointment. Keep all medical records and receipts of doctor visits, tests and surgeries.
