Do I have to call the police after a car accident?
It is difficult to find two car accidents that are exactly the same. Each car accident occurs for different reasons and have different outcomes. Some are minor fender-benders while others are so severe that they result in the death. After a car accident, many people automatically call the police to come to the accident scene. However, South Carolina law only requires drivers in an automobile collision to notify the police in certain accidents.
Drivers involved in car accidents that result in injury or death must immediately contact the police or the South Carolina Highway Patrol and report the accident either orally or in writing. If such an accident is not investigated by a law enforcement officer, drivers have fifteen days after the accident to submit a written report and verification of their liability insurance coverage of the accident to the Department of Motor Vehicles.
